MISSION

The Student Success Center’s mission is to prepare University City High School Promise Academy youth for meaningful post-secondary pursuits that will positively impact their lives and their community.  The SSC uses a holistic approach to guide students in identifying their personal interests and aspirations to create a post-secondary plan.

Our work is organized around five main service areas: Academic Support, Leadership Development, Career Exposure, Post-Secondary Planning and Social Support. The Student Success Center partners with UCHS families, teachers, staff and administrators, as well as local higher education institutions, and community-based organizations, to help students discover and achieve their goals.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Our programs and services are driven by three key principles:

Developing Educational Entrepreneurs

We believe that education is an investment—not just an investment of money, but also, an investment of time, energy and passion.

Educational entrepreneurs:

  • Take ownership over their education
  • Set goals and plan the steps necessary to achieve them
  • See learning as a life-long pursuit, in and out of the classroom
  • Advocate for themselves
  • Make the most of every moment

Creating a School-Wide College-Going Culture

The Student Success Center serves as a hub for resources and support with everything college and career related. In addition to directly serving students on a drop-in basis, we collaborate with staff, teachers and families to integrate college/career awareness and planning into the curriculum and school activities.

Impacting the Community

It is projected that by 2014, 90% of the fastest-growing careers will require a college education.  Therefore, it is critical that we prepare our students for a life of options, rather than limitations. The Student Success Center is committed to helping our youth access the necessary resources to successfully further their education in a personally fulfilling manner. In addition, we believe that education is a vehicle for social change—successful Educational Entrepreneurs use the same skills of commitment, planning and ownership to advocate for their communities. We aim to motivate our youth to apply their education to solving social issues.
